He was not the right man, but he was almost enough. Canada was nothing like England, but better than nothing and happy enough to be recognised that it didn’t seem to bother him that he was a replacement. It didn’t bother France either. He knew that England would never have him – there was too much history between them: too many heroes slain, lands conquered and battlefields soaked in blood – but he would never have Canada either. He barely knew who Canada was; he always mistook him for America at first, and always seemed disappointed that he wasn’t – England was too caught up in self-loathing to notice America’s pigtail-pulling brand of flirting.
And so France didn’t mind that it was England’s name that spilled from Canada’s lips every time they fucked. He did the same, after all.
