The problem is that both of those emotional pivots are sort of necessary to the series as a whole and choosing which of them is agonising.

Gimli would probably have to do a double take to realise what they were, but I think he'd just decide that Legolas' weird definitely comes from his Elvish parent and just go with it. He's wonderfully grounded like that XD
