Ahhhh, I hate Johnny Depp's Grindelwald too. He's so terrible. BUT I can't help but think that a better characterised and better acted Grindelwald would have tons of fun with Newt, which is why this happened. They'd be perfect for enemy!slash.
If it helps at all, imagine Jamie Campbell Bower (the actor who played young!Grindelwald) aged up a bit. I know I did.
(I'm pretty sure he's on the spectrum as well, which makes Grindelwald's trapping him against a wall and forcing eye contact a complete dick-move. But, well, dark lord.)
