Journaling prompt: What are your favorite summer-associated foods?
- When I was very little, we spent summers camping in France, and to this day summer food is BBQ. Specifically things like langoustines, which taste incredible grilled and which have the kind of claws which entranced kiddie!me.
- Sandwiches. When I was little, it was corned beef and ketchup sandwiches on the beach (with added sand). As I've grown older, it's stuff like banh mi and po'boys. When summer hit here this year, it was too hot to eat anything warm, so I basically lived off of banh mi and -
- Pickles. Usually pickled radishes, but I discovered this year that pickled lotus is bangin'.
Creative prompt: Draw art of or make graphics of summer foods, or post your favorite summer recipes.
Back in the days when it was me, my mother, and my brother in the house, I used to get put in charge of salads and marinades and stuff. So, despite the fact that I'm the least salad-y person on earth, have a salad recipe.
Quarter and de-stone a couple of nectarines and yeet them into a pan to char.
Meanwhile, grab salad leaves of your choice (I like the mixed bags with peppery things for this: rocket/arugala and watercress, etc.) and dump them into a salad bowl with feta and/or blue cheese, pomegranate seeds, and (optional) some cous cous. Once the nectarines are jammy and slightly blackened at the edges, throw those in too. Mix.
Add salad dressing of choice should you desire. Everyone in my family hates salad dressing, so trial and error your own.
Goes well with BBQ of the slightly-too-burned at the edges variety. (Thanks, bro.)
