Honestly? They might have with public schools, but I went through the private school system, which is basically the personal fiefdom of whoever is in charge of the place at the time. It can sometimes lead to progress, but it also leads to weird holdovers and some things falling behind.
I know that my nephew is learning it - he hates it XD - and he's now in high school. So nature is healing, I guess, and someone out there realised what a terrible idea the whole thing was.
