Notes: Dedicated to Djehuty in accordance to Ostara 2008.
1. His human family never understood why he never aged. While his mother and her husband grew old and grey and wrinkled, and little Shuuichi-kun grew into a strong and powerful man, Kurama remained in the body of a slender and willowy teenager. And even when his mother was on her deathbed and he sat by her side, clutching at her arthritic fingers, he couldn’t answer the question in her eyes.
2. Out of all his team mates, Kuwabara was the first to die. It was to be expected: Kuwabara was the only human amongst them. He never complained as he aged and his friends remained young. He accepted it, and for that, Kurama respected Kuwabara even more.
3. Yusuke was the next of them to go. He, like his demon father Raizen, had made the mistake of falling in love with a human, and no matter how much he protested the fact, Yusuke was never as strong as Raizen had been. So when Keiko died of old age, Yusuke followed just two years later.
4. After Shuuichi-kun died, Kurama knew that there was no point in his staying in the Ningenkai. Shuuichi’s descendants stared at him and whispered about him when they thought he couldn’t hear. Shuuichi-kun had realised that Kurama wasn’t human long before his death, and had passed that knowledge onto his children and their children. So as soon as Shuuichi’s eyes drifted closed, and Botan came to collect his soul, Kurama left the room filled with his whispering, frightened relatives and left the Ningenkai behind.
5. Jin and Touya died together in a brutal attack from Mukuro’s forces. They fought back to back until the very end, and once one fell, the other did not outlive him by more than a second.
6. Hiei had not been part of the attack that killed Jin and Touya. He had left Mukuro years previously, and had been wandering the Makai until open war spread throughout the entire realm. He died on the battlefield – just as he had always wanted to – fighting by Kurama’s side. It had taken an army of Mukuro’s most powerful minions to take him down, and even then, most of them went down with him. His only regret was never getting the chance to see the full extent of Kurama’s power.
7. Kurama was the one who killed Mukuro. She was strong and their battle was long, but in the end she lost because she, like so many others before her, underestimated Kurama.
8. Kurama had never told anyone that the human body he had bound himself to had already been dead. If he hadn’t taken the unborn body of Minamino Shuuichi and made it his own, Shiori would have miscarried just hours later.
9. Koenma was the one who figured it out in the end. One afternoon, while he and Kurama sat sipping tea in his office, he broached the subject. Kurama didn’t reply, but the pain in his eyes was answer enough. A nine tailed fox would never die and was doomed to wander the earth alone, and Kurama had lost his chance to die long ago.
