“Ah! It’s you!”

Amano jumped about a foot in the air, almost dropping the basket filled with cigarettes, coffee and instant ramen he’d been sent out to buy for the office, and turned to see who had spoken. It was a familiar looking girl with cropped brown hair and big brown eyes. She was holding several packs of tea bags and was looking at him worriedly as if he were about to attack her.

It was the girl from that other agency, the one who’d been investigating Asagi. Shibuya Psychic Research, or something like that.

“Hello,” Amano said awkwardly, well aware that the last time they had met, he had been standing in a back alley with a far-too-pretty-in-a-sinister-way demon.

“Oh, excuse me,” she said, offering him a small, polite bow. “I didn’t introduce myself last time. I’m Taniyama Mai.”

“Amano Naoki,” he told her. “Nice to meet you.”

She shuffled her feet awkwardly and bit her lip. The girl in front of Amano in the queue – a ditzy, short haired blonde in a skirt just as short as Taniyama’s – kept studying the rack of chocolate bars on the counter. She picked up far more than most people could eat while her red-haired friend sighed with badly suppressed amusement.

“Are you alright?” he asked Taniyama after a moment.

“Yes,” she said immediately, then her face crumpled with worry. “I mean, I’ve been worried about you.”

“Why?” he asked curiously. He hadn’t given her the impression that he was in any trouble either of the times that they’d met, so the only cause for her concern that he could see was if the trouble was going to come from her agency.

“Lin-san, the man I was with last time, he said that your boss was a demon,” she said.

The girl in front of them stiffened, and she glanced over her shoulder with wide brown eyes. She had clips the shape of grinning mouths in her cropped hair, and she looked as if she was trying not to be obvious as she listened in. Amano sighed. The checkout queue in a convenience store was not the place to discuss Asagi’s many bizarre quirks.

“Yeah,” he said slowly. “He is, I guess.”

“Aren’t you scared of him?” Taniyama pressed. “How did you end up working for him?”

“I’m not afraid of him,” Amano admitted. He smiled slightly. “I know he’s not dangerous to me and the rest of the people we work with, even if he is weird and creepy. As for how I ended up with him…he investigated a case at my high school a few years ago. I helped and he hired me.”

“Oh,” Taniyama said quietly. “You’re okay then?”

“Yeah,” he replied.

She beamed up at him, and for the first time since they’d met, he realised that she was actually quite pretty. She wasn’t pretty in the same way as Mahime or Yahiro or Asagi, rather she was a less stunning – or creepy – kind of pretty. She was even sort of plain until she smiled. She had the kind of smile that could light up a room.

“Good,” she said. “I’m glad. You see…we’ve had a few run-ins with demons in the past, and we haven’t been strong enough to deal with them. They were so strong and dangerous and when I found out that Nanami-san was a demon too, I worried about you.”

“Asagi is strong,” Amano said. “And he’s dangerous. But he’s a good guy too, in his own way.”

Her eyes widened again, and her wide smile turned cheeky. “You love him,” she said.

The girl in front of them choked, and Amano blushed violently as he spluttered meaningless protests. Taniyama laughed at him.

“Sorry,” she said, not sounding in the slightest bit sorry at all. “That was pretty forward of me.”

Amano glared at her, red still staining his cheeks. He couldn’t even protest properly, because every time he tried to deny it, the words came out wrong and there was a strange pang in his heart. Asagi was the kind of person who grew on you whether you liked it or not.

“It’s okay,” he told her. “Just…please don’t say that so loudly ever again.”

Taniyama laughed again.

“Come on Yako,” the red-haired friend of the girl in front of them said. “You’re going to be late for work.”

The blonde gave a nervous laugh, and fished her purse out of her bag after selecting one more chocolate bar. “Yes Kanae,” she said. “I’m sorry about making you wait.”

The red-haired girl, Kanae, snorted with laughter and shook her head. “I’m used to it,” she said, chuckling softly. She helped gather the blonde’s mountain of food into shopping bags and they left, chatting happily. But at the doorway, the blonde turned once more, and looked back at Amano and Taniyama. She was frowning thoughtfully, and for a moment Amano thought that she looked incredibly familiar, before she turned away and left.

“Was that Katsuragi Yako?” Taniyama asked as he stepped forward to unload his basket onto the counter.

“That school girl detective?” he asked her, peering after the blonde though he could no longer see her. “Weird, three detectives in the same queue.”

“Yeah,” Taniyama agreed. “It is odd.”

Amano frowned, wondering if their conversation about Asagi had attracted too much of her attention, and if he could be expecting a call from her soon, or whether her curiosity had just been that. Either way, it was too late now to take back his words or Taniyama’s questions. If she started to investigate them too – how many detective agencies could a detective agency have investigating it, he wondered – then Asagi would be angry.

He supposed that he’d just have to wait and see.

Summary: Mahime is involved in a case of easily mistaken identity.

“Amano-san!

He didn’t turn around, and Mahime cursed silently. Her shoes weren’t really made for running, but it looked like she would have to in order to catch up with him. People stared at her as she dashed past them. It wasn’t every day that you saw a pretty girl in a maid outfit running down the streets of Tokyo, after all.

“Amano-san!” she called again. She was gaining on him, but he still didn’t turn around. “Amano-san!”

Puffing slightly with exertion she slowed down and reached out, catching his arm just above the elbow. “Amano-san, why didn’t you wait?” she asked in between gasps for air.

“Um, excuse me?”

She blinked. That voice didn’t belong to Amano-san. She looked up at the man’s face and pulled away, realising her mistake. He was looking down at her with brilliant bright green eyes, a confused expression on his face. There was a red haired woman standing next to him who had a less than friendly expression on her face. They were Westerners, and the man was definitely not Amano-san.

“I’m sorry,” she gasped out, her cheeks going scarlet. “I thought you were a friend of mine.” She bowed politely. “Please forgive me.”

“Um…” the young man looked embarrassed. “Sure,” he said, his foreign accent showing through his Japanese. “It’s no problem.”

He bowed back, quickly, showing his unfamiliarity with the custom. The red-head rolled her eyes and tugged on his arm. “Come on Harry,” she muttered.

“Hang on Ginny, maybe she knows the way,” the young man replied. “Um, excuse me? Do you know the way to Shibuya from here?”

Mahime smiled and began to give them directions. It was a fairly simple route, but she realised that the streets of Tokyo must be confusing for foreigners on their first visit…and it was the least she could do for interrupting them.

“Mahime-chan?”

She looked up. It was Amano-san, and by his side, their fingers entwined, Asagi-sama. From the corner of her eye, she saw the young man she had accosted do a double take as he realised just how easy her mistake had been to make. She shot him a smile, which made the red-head bristle slightly.

“And then you turn right down the first street you come to, and you’re there,” she finished. “Please excuse me…”

“Thank you for your help,” the young man replied. “We won’t keep your friends waiting.”

She smiled, bowed again, and trotted over to Amano-san and Asagi-sama. Asagi was watching the young couple closely, his red eyes slightly narrowed; Amano greeted her warmly.

“Do I want to know?” he asked, jerking his head in the direction the couple had gone.

“It was just a case of mistaken identity, Amano-san,” she replied with a giggle.

“How was Shibuya?” Hermione asked brushing a lock of curly hair out of her face as Ginny and Harry sat down. They had decided to split up that morning and meet at seven in the restaurant they’d picked out the previous night.

“Great, once we got there,” Ginny told her, shooting Harry a look.

Harry rolled his eyes. “You weren’t any better at reading the map than I was, Ginny,” he reminded her, and she sniffed in annoyance.

“Don’t fight,” Ron reprimanded them both. “How long did it take you?”

“Two hours,” Ginny said.

“Only five minutes after I asked that girl, though,” Harry pointed out. “An idea which you were against, might I add.”

“Didn’t you see how she was dressed?” Ginny asked him. “What kind of girl goes running after men while dressed in a skimpy maid’s outfit?”

“What are you two talking about?” Hermione asked.

Harry sighed. “Just a case of mistaken identity.”
