Disclaimer: I do not own Carmilla and am making no profit from this story.
Summary: She keeps the portrait in her room, and lights a candle before it every night.
Author's Notes: I reread Carmilla yesterday and was reminded why it's my all-time favourite vampire story. If you haven't read it, it can be found in full here. This was written for
femslash100's Challenge 407.
The portrait still hangs in her room. Each night she lights a taper in front of it in a ritual she doesn’t quite understand, just to see life spark in oil-painted eyes. Hate and fear still flutter in her breast, but still there is longing. Longing to run her fingers through lustrous dark hair, to feel the darts of pain as she is fed upon and hear soft, sweet words whispered in her ear.
She feels betrayed by herself, but never does she take the portrait down. It is all she has left of her beloved Carmilla save her memories.
