Good point about the Occlumency. It'd kind of forgotten that... *blushes* I think it's implied, though, that the Killing Curse is what splits your soul while the Dark Arts just corrupt. So Ignotus would be corrupted - heavily - but not broken apart and frayed.
Rotting would be interesting. Hmm... I do think that there are different types of damage the soul can sustain, like part of the madness that comes from being around Dementors for too long may come from having your soul nibbled as they feed from your happy emotions.
