The hunting of the petty-dwarves always freaked me out a little - it was so senselessly cruel - and I think Gimli would remember it at first, if only out of a sense of heightened paranoia when forced into the constant company of an Elf. Besides, it's really underused in fic.
Elves really do remind me of cats, though, and that's one of the reasons why.
