For a moment, she thinks it isn’t working. White mist swirls in the crystal ball between them, and Lavender sighs. She can hear some of the boys muttering to each other about burn marks and uselessness, and she wants so desperately to See something that – when she does – she almost misses it.
A girl changing into a wolf and back; a goddess with many arms; a moon overhead and a potion bubbling in a cauldron; a feeling, as she watches, of warmth and contentment spreading in her chest.
There’s a pang of loss when the vision swirls back into smoke. She blinks. Incense is stinging her eyes worse than she’d thought – there’s a goddess in the chair next to her.
