“We’ve got a very different destiny,” Bela tells her, carding her fingers through Jo’s hair. “It’s something we’ve got to accept, darling. You don’t want to head in my direction.”
For all that she says that, Jo does. She wants to track down the demon that holds Bela’s contract and find a way to stop it or to make sure that whatever happens, she and Bela will stay together. Her need for it is a hard, burning thing in her chest that she has to push down in case Bela sees it and loses all her quiet acceptance of fate.
