She wakes up alone and knows that Bela’s dead. The sheets on her side of the bed are rumpled and cold; most of her clothes are missing, but her jewellery is still scattered on the bedside table in a constellation of abandoned diamonds and her jacket is still draped over the chair.

Jo sits up, wraps the sheets tight around her body, and she reaches automatically for her phone. There’s an unread message waiting for her, but she doesn’t open it. It doesn’t matter. Bela’s gone, and all that’s left of her is a bruise where Jo’s heart should be.
