“I used to think you would be my mother-in-law,” Pansy says, slow and languid like the hand she trails down Narcissa’s side.

There’s smoke twisting up from the cigarette in her other hand; furling out of her mouth to form a blue halo around her black hair. It’s a disgusting habit, one that makes Narcissa wrinkle her nose every time, but she never complains. For all the stink, Pansy makes it stylish.

She thinks of Astoria: the pale, bland girl that her son decided on; compares her to Pansy’s angular, black bob and red-painted lips, and she smiles.

“Draco’s loss.”
