She’s always her first customer. Every day, she’s the first through the door – obscenely high heels clicking on the hardwood floor. She’s regular as clockwork: she arrives at five-thirty sharp, always looking immaculate in tight, slinky skirt-suits and neutral make-up broken by the dark red slash of her lipstick.

Maria knows her order. It’s the same every day: a treble shot skinny latte to go, and she takes it the same way too – a brilliantly grateful smile shot in Maria’s direction as she curls her manicured fingers round the cardboard cup.

Same lady, same drink; it takes Maria three weeks to break routine and ask for her name.

It’s Pepper.
