Summary: Prussia makes sure to pack a special jacket when he moves in with Canada.
AN: Because, dear fandom, Prussia was an Axis nation. That and Canada is secretly awesome. This is based on the liberation of the Netherlands by Canadian forces in WW2.
When he moves into Canada’s house, he packs the old jacket into a suitcase with the intention to leave it in there, hidden in an attic. It’s a filthy old thing, but not the oldest thing he owns. There’s a tabard from his days as a Teutonic Knight and a sword that are far older, but the jacket is special. It’s black underneath all the mud, and stitched onto the sleeve is a faded red band emblazoned with a swastika. It’s ripped and torn and something that no one should be proud to own, hence his determination to hide it, but he can’t leave it behind.
The first time he ever really noticed Canada was when he was thrown down into the muddy fields of the Netherlands, bleeding and panting and exhausted from fighting a war with no honour on behalf of his younger brother. He’d looked up and seen a nation that wasn’t America standing over him. He was softer, somehow, even in his victory. His hair was lighter than America’s, his eyes more violet than blue and his body was slighter, but he was strong.
He hadn’t understood, afterwards, why Canada was ignored so much in the summit meetings. He’d done so much: fought, bled and sacrificed, and yet…
Prussia folds the jacket carefully, minding the rips and tears and the old badges he never removed from it – the eagle with a swastika in its talons, the SS insignia – and places it in the bottom of his case. He doesn’t know if Canada even remembers the part he played in the Second World War. He’s never mentioned it. But Prussia will remember for him if he doesn’t, and he’ll keep the jacket as proof.
