There are two letters on the table in front of her. On the right, Draco Malfoy begs for redemption in neat italic whorls; on the left, Harry Potter asks for a place away from the battlefield. Their applications are accompanied by references, most of them from her colleagues, although she notes with amusement that Potter has written one of Malfoy’s – assuring her as he had done the Wizengamot that Draco Malfoy’s war-crimes were committed under severe threat. She wonders if he’d known where Malfoy intended to submit it to.
They’d make good healers, she thinks. Neither of them crumble under pressure (she’s heard of Malfoy’s lie; the one that saved Potter’s life), both of them have talent and a dedication to proving themselves to the rest of the world. Both of them want to help others, though for different reasons: Potter because he has to; Malfoy because he has to show that he can. They both have the grades and, now that the dust has settled and the battle lines washed away by blood, they both have the beginnings of the proper bedside manner.
But who to choose? Healers usually only ever take one apprentice at a time. She knows that Malfoy’s situation is different – that not many people will give an ex-Death Eater a chance no matter who vouches for them, and that Potter would be snapped up by anyone on account of his name. She also knows that that’s why Potter’s applying to her. He trusts her not to.
In the end, she waves her wand over the acceptance letter she’d pre-written and she duplicates it. The war is over. They need all the healers they can get, and something is telling her that Potter and Malfoy can heal each other as well.
