Title: The Honour of War
Author: Evandar
Fandom: Lord of the Rings
Rating: G
Pairing: Legolas/Gimli
Genre: Angst
Disclaimer: I do not own Lord of the Rings and am making no profit from this story.
Summary: Gimli searches for honour in war.
Author's Notes: Written for my GenPrompt Bingo table for the prompt 'Honour/Prestige'.

“What honour is there in this?” he asks, staring out over the plains of dead and dying. Black and Elvish arrows jut up from between plates of armour, and the mud beneath his feet stinks of blood and shit as it sucks at his boots.

“The honour of dying for a greater cause?” the Elf suggests, but means none of it. He seems older now than he did five days ago, and the fact that he has aged at all in manner is enough to cause Gimli concern. He wants back the light-hearted archer with whom he bonded in Lorien.

He finds an Elvish arrow, speared through the throat of an Uruk-Hai, and wrenches it free, presenting it to his friend. Legolas takes it carefully, but no matter how careful he is, black Orc blood will always be a stain on his slender hands.

No matter the honour of the cause, or even the prestige of their potential victory, this war is darkness until they become other - both more and less than themselves – and never will that stain wash away.

But for all the doom and inglorious death, the Elf is at his side. Older and wearier, but his.

They're left so out of focus in the story that it's easy to imagine the war having no effect on them at all - except that wouldn't happen. So. This. And yeah, out of everyone, they would notice each other changing first.
