hp_creatures May Challenge and the prompt 'Illness' on my GenPrompt Bingo table.
“Why, Remus, what big teeth you have,” Sirius says, leaning up against the sink and fixing Remus with a look.
He knows. The realisation makes him choke on his toothpaste, his eyes watering as he hacks minty foam into the basin, and then Sirius is there, patting him on the back.
“Hey, hey, it’s alright.” Sirius is speaking, softly and right into Remus’ ear, and as Remus begins to calm down, he starts to rub instead of pat – small soothing circles, just between Remus’ shoulder blades. “Hush...it’s okay. You’re okay.”
“I – “
He ducks out from under Sirius’ hand, splashes his face with water and wipes it dry with the sleeve of his robe. He’s not having this conversation covered in toothpaste. Just no. But that’s all the composure he’s allowed to give himself because Sirius is still right there, watching him.
“I’m not okay,” he says after a moment. “I’m a –“
“Werewolf,” Sirius finishes for him. “I know.”
Remus has to force himself to meet Sirius’ gaze. His eyes are wider than usual, but he can’t see any pity or fear – just surprise, like he hadn’t thought he’d be right. Which is stupid, really, because Sirius is far more intelligent than he gives himself credit for. He swallows.
“I figured it out,” Sirius says. “Looked up all your symptoms in a book over the summer – there’s books about everything at home, and Mother was pleased I was taking an interest in studying instead of pranks, and… It fit. You being a werewolf, I mean. The disappearances at every full moon, the aversion to silver and strong smells, the colour blindness, the rare meat…”
He steps a little closer, stretches out his hand, and Remus doesn’t move away. His heart is pounding in his chest when Sirius’ fingers entwine with his own.
“I didn’t tell anyone,” Sirius tells him as he rubs his thumb over Remus’ knuckles. “I just thought –“ He breaks off to clear his throat and to offer Remus a shaky smile. “I thought you should know that I know, you know?”
Remus feels his lips twitch. “Right,” he says. He squeezes Sirius’s hand. “It doesn’t bother you?” he asks.
Sirius scoffs and tosses his hair, giving Remus his very best haughty pureblood expression before he cracks and grins – wide and wild and so Sirius that it makes Remus’ heart skip a beat.
“There are worse things in the Black family tree than werewolves,” Sirius says, and Remus’ disbelief has to show on his face because Sirius continues. “Like, oh, a fourteenth century Dark Lord and his patricidal heir. And my cousin Bella. Mother. Aunt Cassiopeia – she blackmailed Grindelwald, you know – the list could go on. It’s fine, Remus.” He tightens his grip on Remus’ hand. “It’s all fine.”
Remus smiles. He’d like to believe that. “Thanks,” he says.
