Natasha has a bruise under her eye and a gash along the edge of her cheekbone, crusted dark with dry blood. She reports with a straight back and a neutral expression because that’s what Natasha does, and Maria listens with a blank face and ignores the sick feeling in her stomach because she has to.

She’ll be the one to sterilise that cut and seal it closed with steristrips. She’ll be the one to place a kiss just under that bruise and rub away all the aches in Natasha’s muscles, but that will come later. For now, she will listen.
