Natasha is laughing and smiling and tucking her hair behind her ear with her left hand to flash the diamond on her ring finger. She’s leaning into Maria’s side, cuddled under her arm; warm and soft as she looks for their target. She looks so happy like this, Maria thinks.

She wants this to be real. She wants to have given Natasha that ring, tied with ribbon to the long stem of a red rose – the story Natasha has cooked up for this assignment – to have dented her savings for it. She wants, but this is all she’ll ever get.
