Summary: Tag Season 4x13 - After School Special Dean's not sure when he gave up on school.
Author's Notes: This was written for the prompt 'The Dispossessed' on my GenPrompt Bingo table.

Dean’s not sure when he stopped caring about school. He can’t really seem to remember a time when he tried, but he thinks that he must have at some point, because Sammy’s passion for all things learning has to have been developed by someone and it sure as hell wasn’t Dad.

He’s proud that Sammy still cares. That Sammy lugs a backpack full of school books round the country with them; that he reads and rereads To Kill a Mockingbird in between tracking wendigos and werewolves and that he competes as a mathlete in South Carolina when Dad’s boozing off a job turned sour and a broken leg. He likes to think that in another life, Sammy would be a scholarship kid – skipping grades and heading straight to college. They even try it once, the skipping grades thing, in Chicago, but while Sammy’s smart, he’s missed out on so much that he struggles. Dad never notices because it’s Dean’s job (one of them) to take care of this kind of thing.

To take care of Sammy.

He doesn’t bother with books himself. The last ones he had he gave to Sammy so that they wouldn’t have to buy them again later, and he spends his school days dicking around and chasing skirt. It’s a cool way to live, he’s told, with no rules and no regard for them, but a little part of him wishes that he had the same resolve as Sammy – to improve himself no matter what. But he’s not Sammy and, unlike his brother, he doesn’t see the point in it. Why would he? He’s a hunter – a hero – and he’s never going to be anything else; least of all this mythical ‘normal’ that Sammy keeps banging on about.

He, unlike Sammy, keeps his eyes open at all times. He sees the highs and the lows in a million different high schools spread across the country. They’re all the same, and they blur into one, and the most defining feature of all of them is that no one in them is normal. Their fellow classmates all define themselves as ‘so weird’ while trying to fit in with a bunch of others who couldn’t care less. But it was ‘sad’ and ‘lonely’ of him every time he tried to point it out to someone, so somewhere down the line he just stopped, figuring that not everyone had the luxury of seeing as much as him.

So he heads into another new school – third one this year, Sammy tells him, and it’s only November – without a book and without a pen. He cheeks the teacher and flirts with the blonde chick next to him, and announces it loud and proud to the whole damn class.

“I’m not going to be here long enough to matter.”

This made me remember so many good Dean-fanfics, in which Dean's (bleak, lonely, heartbreaking) life as a child was shown. He deserved more out of life.
He would've been like Michael in Dresden Files, a warrior of justice, but a good father first and foremost.

I love Supernatural kid-fic. Dean especially had such a hard time (that I adore reading about), stuck between his father and his brother. He did deserve so much better. I love seeing the AUs where he gets that chance.

In another life, Dean would have been a spectacular father. Unfortunately, with canon, he's too broken by Season 6 to do it.

Oh yes, I do too... You haven't followed the fandom in the last 2 years by any chance? I didn't and I would love a few recs.

Season 6? What season 6? My canon ends with season 5. ;) After all, that was the planned end, before some people decided to make it 100% about commerce. ^^

Not so much, really. SPN fandom terrifies me beyond all belief. I occasionally scribble things for it, eye it warily, and then back away. From what I have seen, it looks like the A/B/O trope exploded all over it, and since I can't stand it... Eh.

There's Deleted Scenes (http://archiveofourown.org/series/10109) which is an impressively huge undertaking, charting Wincest through Seasons1-5 (currently up to 5x5)

Kindness of a Stranger (http://archiveofourown.org/works/549304), which is an AR after the Season 1 episode Shadow with human!Cas/Dean. Sadly, the premise isn't that hard to believe, either.

Crush (http://archiveofourown.org/works/826173/chapters/1568741) - domestic!Wincest through the eyes of an outsider who develops a crush on both of them.

How (thanks to Gabriel) Dean and Castial (accidentally) raised each other (and Sam) (http://archiveofourown.org/works/540915/chapters/961503) is what it says on the tin. Gabriel messes with the timeline; everything changes. There's some pretty cure kid! scenes as well and both boys are more balanced than in canon.

I'm...venturing in for Season 9 Gabriel. That's it. That's my only reason. I'm rewatching Season 4 at the moment, though ^.^ And I agree wholeheartedly that they should have stopped and let it end after Season 5, but...but...Gabriel. Agh! I want him to live.

A/B/O trope? What's that?

Besides that, yeah. I look at it and then back off slowly...

Thanks for the links. "Kindness of a Stranger" was really good. :) I haven't yet read the rest, but I will.

I admire your bravery. I couldn't even stomach season 6, and to go up to season 9... just wow. (btw. Season 9?! It must be far more popular than I thought).
I want Gabriel to live too. And Adam. Poor, poor Adam. Got the Winchester fate, without ever doing anything to deserve it. If there ever was an innocent man in hell, Adam is it.
And so far I saw everyone forgot him in Season 6. -_-

A/B/O stands for Alpha/Beta/Omega (http://fanlore.org/wiki/Alpha/Beta/Omega) and it seems to mostly be an excuse for really, really bad porn and exaggerated gender roles.

'Kindness of a Stranger' is one of the ones that I reread every time I do return to Supernatural. Definitely in my top ten.

I'm kind of procrastinating over it. I started Season 4, got half way through, and then decided that no - I want to rewatch from the absolute beginning. So I'm now at Season 1x6. I'm terrible like that with TV shows. I can ever really focus on them and keep getting distracted. But! Season 6 is waiting for me, so I'm going to grit my teeth and at least try it.

And I think they've just confirmed Season 10. Because, you know, they haven't made it ridiculous enough yet.

Adam was such a kick in the teeth. I mean, his existence was very much IC for John, IMHO, but seriously. That kid got such a raw deal. :( I liked Pamela too - and her comment that everyone who came into contact with the Winchesters just got completely fucked over, because it's true. Especially towards the end.

I hadn't known that this originated in the SPN fandom. -_- Yeah, I unfortunately read such stories, but I can't remember one that was acceptable. It just... I mean, they are male. Why the hell say an Omega can get pregnant? Then he's not a HE. But a *she*.

Very good, yes. ^^ I have to look trough my old archive, there were a few old gems... mostly about Dean. :p I liked him a lot more than Sam's "revenge" mindset.

I admire your determination. ^^ Nothing could bring me to watch anything past season 5.

ugh. Season 10.... *headdesk* Just kill them already and let them enjoy the afterlife. Or send them into a different dimension permanently. Or 300 years into the past also permanently. But this is ridiculous.

I was complete shocked by his existence, then I loved it. Because yes, it was IC and it showed just what a great bastard John is - and how long he must have left Dean and Sam alone. (Tell me if Adam gets rescued in the later seasons... I hope so. )
Pamela's comment was so true, yes. Though they rescue more people, than they "kill"... still I think that Dean was the most responsible of the 3. He has wishes clearly for a child, for a family, but denies himself the whole time. Sam on the other hand... he's a lot more willing to break a few eggs.
