She perched on the edge of Elle’s bed, tense and nervous. Even dishevelled, dressed in an oversized sweater with her hair scraped back, no make-up and a textbook spread over her lap, she was beautiful. Bright and golden and almost too much to look at, and a far better person than Vivian had given her credit for.

She tucked her hair behind her ear and leaned forward, babbling from nerves, and she realised – halfway through an anecdote about Warner – that she was flirting. And that Elle, giggling and playing with the edge of her book, was starting to flirt back.
